October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), and, as in previous years, the focus is on a challenge that is facing the world of cybersecurity. This year, NCSAM is putting the focus on awareness and education for students, businesses, and consumers. NCSAM also works to promote a cyber-secure workforce that helps communities and businesses stay protected from potential threats by providing education about the impact of the internet on everything from our social lives to government security.
This week, the theme is “Make Your Home a Haven for Online Safety.” Parents should be aware of basic safety and privacy procedures and share that information with their children. With online shopping, social media, and connected toys, most children are exposed to the internet at a very young age, so it is critical to teach them the basics of internet and cyber safety to ensure a protected environment. This week focuses on cybersecurity tactics the whole family can use to protect their homes.
From October 8 to October 12, the theme will be “Millions of Rewarding Jobs: Educating for a Career in Cybersecurity.” In recent years, there has been a continued shortage of cybersecurity professionals who have the education and training necessary to combat cyber threats. By instilling cybersecurity practices in the next generation, we can work to build stronger future defenses. Veterans re-entering the workforce also can explore jobs in cybersecurity that may be closely related to their defense background. This week will focus on motivating teachers, parents, and counselors to inspire students to learn about cybersecurity careers.
“It’s Everyone’s Job to Ensure Online Safety at Work,” will be the theme for October 15 to 19. Almost all jobs today require the use of the internet for everything from tracking time for paychecks to offering customer service or information about the business. From restaurants to corporate offices, it is important to ensure the online safety of your company. This week will focus on workforce education, awareness, and training that highlights risk management. Businesses will learn how to protect themselves against possible cyber threats.
The theme for the week of October 22-26 will be “Safeguarding the Nation’s Critical Infrastructure.” In our daily life, we depend on the country’s infrastructure for food, water, and health services. Any threat to these systems can have a major impact on the nation. Learn the importance of securing critical infrastructure and your role in security. Week Four will also highlight and lead the way into NCSAM’s Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month in November.
